Deja vu descended on Doomben on Sunday when gutsy Gold Coast filly Military Grace scored a hard-fought win in the $150,000 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m).
Military Grace's stablemate Military Rose won last year's McLachlan Stakes en route to her devastating win in the Magic Millions and trainer Gillian Heinrich confirmed it was all systems go in her bid for back-to-back wins in the juvenile feature.
"She'll go straight into the Magic Millions now and there is still plenty of improvement in her," Heinrich said.
"She'd only had one trial over 1000 metres before her first-up run two weeks ago and she'll take benefit out of this.
"Today's run on the wet track would have tightened her up that little bit more and she'll be spot on come Magic Millions day."
The $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) is run on January 15 at the Gold Coast and Heinrich is likely to have two runners after Internal Revenue finished a game fourth in Sunday's race.
Military Grace ($5) was given a gun run by Dan Griffin and the General Nediym filly handled the heavy conditions to beat the favourite Wonderful You ($4.60) by a long neck with Merryanna ($61) a short half-head away third.
Wonderful You struggled to keep up in the early stages but the General Nediym colt charged to the line in the final 300m.
He took his prizemoney to $33,000 with his second placing and the colt's trainer Kelso Wood is confident that will be enough money to get the horse into the Magic Millions.
"There's three weeks until the race so the option is there to give him another run if I have to," Wood said.
Wonderful You's rider Damien Browne was rapt with the colt's performance but he did express some concern about the horse's ability to adapt to the Magic Millions.
"He didn't have the speed to go with them early today and he's still learning what it's all about," Browne said.
"The penny hasn't quite dropped with him yet but once it does he's going to make a really nice horse.
"It will be hard to win a Magic Millions doing things wrong like he does but with the further improvement he'll take out of this run he'll be a definite chance."
