Magic Millions Guineas fancy Intencion faces two interstate float trips in a week as he tries to win a place in the Gold Coast feature.
Trainer Tony Vasil decided on Thursday against running the colt at Caulfield on Saturday and will instead send him by road to Sydney where he needs to land the JB (Barry) Maher Memorial Handicap to make next week's Guineas field.
"I don't really want to back him up but I don't have an option," Vasil said.
Despite being in danger of not getting a run, Intencion is $7 second favourite for the Guineas with TAB Sportsbet.
Last spring the son of Commands contested the Caulfield Guineas and was Group Three-placed in the McNeil Stakes (1200m) but has only earned $40,750 in stakes and is 31st in order of entry for the Guineas.
His only win was at Geelong on debut but success in Saturday's Randwick race would push him into the top 20 qualifiers for the Guineas, assuring him of a start.
The kicker is that to get to the Gold Coast he will again have to hit the road with another float trip as there are no suitable flights from Sydney.
"It makes it a hard task," Vasil said.
He said that it would have been easier to run at Caulfield and flown Intencion to Brisbane but the appeal of the Sydney option was that he would get experience racing right-handed for the Guineas.
Vasil said that with "an ounce of luck" Intencion would have earned enough prizemoney and been able to start in the Guineas without another run.
"I thought he was nearly a good thing at Caulfield on Boxing Day but he ran into what probably looks like being a well-above average horse," Vasil said.
The unbeaten Mark Kavanagh-trained gelding A Beta Imagination spoiled the party for Intencion's connections, edging him out by a long neck in the Dennis Hanrahan Handicap (1200m).
Nash Rawiller will ride Intencion at Randwick.
At Caulfield, Vasil will run Roadtrain in the John Moule Handicap (1100m) now that he won't be clashing with his Guineas-bound stablemate.
A son of Not a Single Doubt, Roadtrain won his first three starts in the country at Swan Hill and at Geelong twice last winter.
He was spelled after finishing eighth to Epic Dragon at Moonee Valley on September 11.
"He's only had one trial this time in but he's a nice horse," Vasil said.
Damien Oliver will ride Roadtrain in the six-horse race which also includes Eclair Flyer who is unbeaten in two runs this campaign.
