A weekend interstate Group One result could not have come at a better time for trainer Anthony Cummings and stable newcomer Raheeb.
Raheeb, a recent addition Cummings's expanding team after being purchased by Patinack Farm, will line up as one of the favourites in the Group Three $140,000 Cameron Hcp (1400m) at Newcastle on Wednesday.
Bought as a future stallion prospect, Raheeb made his debut for Cummings when beaten on the line by Typhoon Zed in the Concorde Stakes at Rosehill last month.
Typhoon Zed subsequently put his head out at the right time to win the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday, the first Group One race of the new season.
It's a formline Cummings believe will stand-up on Wednesday - and then deep into the spring carnival.
"If you take a line through Typhoon Zed, Raheeb brings the right form to the table in the Cameron," Cummings said.
"It's Group One form now and that's want you are looking for in a major lead-up race to the Epsom."
Ironically, Raheeb was formerly in the stable of Typhoon Zed's trainer Tim Martin.
Raheeb was one of 13 final Cameron Handicap acceptors and the sparingly-raced five-year-old has drawn favourably in barrier five.
With Gai Waterhouse's unbeaten Ashikaga and the John O'Shea-trained topweight Reigning To Win also in the race, Cummings believes the Cameron will provide the strongest pointer to next month's Group One Epsom Handicap.
"The field is easily the best group of sprinter-milers that has been put together in Sydney since the start of the season," he said.
"There is a lot of depth there as we head towards the Group Ones."
Cummings gave Raheeb a final track gallop at Randwick this morning and he was delighted with the work.
"The gallop confirmed that he has come on well since the Concorde," Cummings said.
Raheeb, who shares the third line of Epsom betting at $9, was given 51kg for the famous mile when weights were released.
A Cameron Handicap victory will make Raheeb liable for an Epsom penalty but more importantly it will earn him automatic entry into the race because the winner is exempt from a ballot.
Ashikaga was installed the $2.50 Cameron favourite to extend his record to five wins from as many starts.
Raheeb and Reigning To Win were next in opening markets at $5.50.
