Trainer Luke Oliver is on track to win his second Bagot Handicap with seven-year-old Good Red while stablemates Elmore and Diamondsondinside are also staking claims for the Flemington feature.

Good Red will take another step towards winning the 2800m Bagot again on New Year's Day when he lines up as the equal topweight against Elmore in Saturday's Legends After The Last Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Diamondsondinside will run in next Thursday's Briseis Gold Cup (2255m) at Geelong.

Oliver said the campaigns of all three horses were going to plan while declaring Elmore a better winning chance than Good Red at the Valley.

Elmore has been particularly pleasing this campaign and produced a career-best run last Saturday when stepping up to Group Three company and finishing fourth, just two lengths behind the winner Bashful Girl, in the Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown.

"He is just about right now," Oliver said.

"Normally we step him up quickly in distance but this time in I am just doing it gradually and trying to space his runs.

"This is easier than last week and the timing allows us to give him a run in another two weeks before the Bagot."

Oliver said Good Red had run well at both his starts this campaign but was still working up to his peak.

"He doesn't really do much until he gets beyond 2000 metres and is another couple of runs away from being fully wound up," Oliver said.

"He's only had the two runs this preparation and was beaten five lengths or six lengths both times on country tracks carrying 59.5kg while giving the others four or five kilos."

Danny O'Brien is hopeful that Buffet can train on from his assignment on Saturday to give him his second Bagot after winning the 2008 race with Gallopin.

Buffet contested the AJC Australian Derby in the autumn and was placed in the VRC St Leger Stakes (2800m) and is fitter for two runs this campaign.

O'Brien said Buffet was a much better horse ridden off the pace and that last he start raced too close to the lead when seventh to Tintern at Flemington on Oaks day.

"He blew out late in the race that day but he has trained on," O'Brien said.
