Gold Water bolstered her impressive record with a solid victory at Randwick on Saturday in a performance apprentice Daniel Ganderton believes displayed all of the classic traits of a Gai Waterhouse runner.

The Choisir filly was pushed to the lead early in the Hit It Benny Handicap (1400m) before Ganderton allowed the $3.20 favourite Villa Moura to take up the running.

Gold Water, who drifted in betting from $3.90 to $5.50, stalked Villa Moura until the final 200 metres before Ganderton went for home and the filly responded.

The three-year-old defeated Villa Moura by three-quarters of a length with Angel's Breath two lengths away third.

The victory gives Gold Water three wins from five starts.

And Ganderton said Waterhouse deserved all of the praise for turning around what he thought was a disappointing performance from Gold Water when she gave up her lead in the closing stages and finished fourth to Serenissima at Randwick on Boxing Day over 1200 metres.

"That was a massive turnaround on the other day, Gai tried a few different things just to help her settle and they certainly worked, it was a great training effort," Ganderton said.

"Gai's horses are always the fittest and usually toughest horses in any race and this one today showed those qualities her horses are renowned for," Ganderton said.

Waterhouse's stable representative Dave Meijer praised Ganderton for a smart ride.

"We love seeing our horses ridden like that, Daniel rode her a treat," Meijer said.

"We'll just keep skipping her through her grades, she's a nice horse."
