Group One winner Gold Trail's consistency could play against him when he resumes as equal topweight in Saturday's Galaxy at Randwick.

Gold Trail won the Group One Railway Stakes (1200m) on New Year's Day in New Zealand and has to carry 58kg in the Galaxy (1100m) which is a concern for trainer Gary Portelli.

"I think he's badly weighted," Portelli said.

"His consistency has got him to this point where he has got a lot of weight in a Group One race.

"Last year he had 51 kilos in this race so I'm a bit disappointed in the weight he's got against some pretty handy horses."

Despite the weight concern, Portelli indicated the five-year-old was going into the Galaxy in career-best shape after a 3-1/2 length barrier trial victory at Warwick Farm last Friday.

"He's going as good as ever, no doubt," the trainer said.

"We just wanted to put our foot down and give him a good gallop (in the trial last week) because he seems to run good off the back of a good hard trial.

"He's right on track."

Gold Trail, who raced as A Gold Trail in New Zealand, was the first horse Portelli had taken outside Australia.

The gelding is set to continue his travelling later this campaign with Singapore and Royal Ascot on the radar.

Portelli said the international venture would be a good learning curve for him.

"I think we're going into it with open eyes," he said.

"We know we're not going over there as a Takeover Target or a Miss Andretti, we're going over there for a good experience, a learning experience, with a horse who we might be able to fluke a placing or even better maybe even fluke a win with."

Gold Trail has won seven of his 24 starts, with six of those victories over the Galaxy distance of 1100m.

He finished third to Nicconi and Danleigh in the race last year.

"He cost the owners $50,000 as a young horse and has won over $600,000, so what he does from here is a bonus," Portelli said.

Gold Trail is rated an $18 chance in the Galaxy with Victorian mare Ortensia the $3.40 favourite ahead of the Mark Kavanagh-trained Definitely Ready at $4.40.

Last-start winner Swift Alliance is next in the market at $6.50.
