Australian sprinter Gold Trail has breezed through his first workout since being injured at Royal Ascot and is on track to contest two more races in England.

Trainer Gary Portelli is back in Sydney and monitoring the progress of the gelding who has received intensive physiotherapy since his King's Stand disappointment.

Portelli said Gold Trail more than likely injured his hindquarter as he came out of the barrier, preventing him from showing anything like the form that earned him a start in the race.

"Gold Trail went three-quarter pace on Saturday which was his first workout since Royal Ascot," Portelli said.

"He was very keen and cooled down well so things seem to be back on track.

"We will step the work up this week but we are keen for him to stay.

"It's not costing us any more to be there and I'd really like him to be able to show what he's capable of.

"We didn't go over there just for the day out and it was very disappointing.

"He was never a chance in the race. I could tell he was not right as soon as he came out of the barriers behind them.

"Hopefully he can do a lot better in the King George at Goodwood at the end of the month and if he can, he'll stay for the Nunthorpe Stakes."

Gold Trail joined the Group One club when he won the Railway Stakes in New Zealand on New Year's Day.

That race is a possibility again depending on how he performs in the coming weeks.

"If he wins or runs a place in either of the races in England then he would probably be weighted out of New Zealand," Portelli said.

"And by the time he gets back to Australia and does his quarantine he may not be able to get ready in time.

"He will definitely miss the spring and he'll probably come back for the autumn."

A world away from England, Portelli will have his first runner in the Jungle Juice Cup at Cessnock when O'Crikey contests Tuesday's feature.

Chris O'Brien will ride O'Crikey who will carry 59.5kg with topweight Newton's Rings to carry the same weight after apprentice Jodie Riley's 4kg claim.
