Trainer Liam Birchley is hoping a strong performance from Glacial Miss at Doomben could open the door to a winter carnival campaign.
Glacial Miss faces a seven-day back-up and an extension in distance in Saturday's James Brockhurst Handicap (1350m) following her last-start third to Bevagna over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
Birchley has no concerns with the quick back-up or the filly stepping up in distance to 1350 metres for the first time as he looks to a winter program for the daughter of Iglesia.
"She's never backed up before but she pulled well after last week's run and the extra distance should suit her," Birchley said.
Birchley described Glacial Miss as a work in progress and has been trying to teach the three-year-old to settle more in her races.
"She gets back in her races and we've been trying to teach to her to settle," he said.
Birchley rated Glacial Miss unlucky not to finish closer to Bevagna when she was held up for a run and beaten just over a length.
"She got held up for a run about 100 metres out and she only needed a bit more luck to win," he said.
"She's on trial at the distance but I don't have any doubt really about her getting the trip.
"The way she hits the line strongly indicates she may get even further."
The winter options for Glacial Miss will broaden dramatically if she shows she may stay.
"She's out of a Lion Hunter mare which doesn't give you confidence she'll stay but some of the Iglesias have shown they can run a trip," Birchley said.
"For the time we'll take each step with her one at a time before getting her up in distance.
"If she shows she might stay the Queensland Oaks is a strong possibility with her."
The Group One Queensland Oaks (2400m) will be run at Eagle Farm in June.
Birchley has named topweight Listen Son as the main danger to Glacial Miss who will be aiming for her third win from only eight starts.
"Listen Son will probably lead as usual and try to control the race and he looks the one to beat again," he said.
