Jarrod Fry had his best day in the saddle at Moonee Valley on Saturday when he landed his first Melbourne double including the Travis Harrison Apprentices Cup aboard Belscenica.

Fry, 21, who had ridden doubles three times in Adelaide including one the previous Saturday, attributed his recent good form to linking up with his new manager Adrian Coyne.

Fry led all the way on Rue Maple ($1.70 fav) prepared by his master, Ballarat trainer Darren Weir, in the Triforce Hcp (1200m) and completed the double on the Tony Noonan-trained Belscenica ($15) with a ground-saving ride.

The rising six-year-old Scenic mare settled last of the 12 runners in the 1514m event and Fry took her along the inside before getting her off the fence at the top of the straight to go out after the leader Das Machen ($2.25 fav) and defeat that mare by three-quarters of a length.

Chouxmaani ($17) was a half-length away third.

"She was really travelling and all I needed was an out so I had to bullock my way to the outside," Fry said.

Fry has now ridden 175 winners including 30 in town.

He has had 12 city successes this season, down from 20 the previous 12 months but attributed that to suspensions and spending two months on the sidelines due to breaking his wrist in a fall at Swan Hill on Anzac Day.

"The horse I was riding had a heart attack and collapsed in the run," Fry said.

"I was out for about two months and I've had a few suspensions so things haven't quite gone according to plan.

"I'd just been riding for Darren (Weir) in previous seasons, but this season he's let me start taking outside rides.

"I rode winners for the Laming and Peter Moody stables in Adelaide last week and my new manager (Coyne) is really doing a good job too."

Belscenica has an impressive record at Moonee Valley winning three and being placed once from five starts on the StrathAyr surface.
