Gold Coast trainer Alan Bailey has mapped out a provincial Cups campaign for talented gelding Frozone after he clung to a narrow victory at Doomben.

Aided by a copybook Glen Colless ride, Frozone ($16) took all the shortcuts along the fence and held off a host of determined challengers in the straight to win Saturday's $45,000 Randy Pascual Handicap (1200m).

Gold Coast six-year-old Ultra ($10) finished powerfully in the last 100m but failed by half neck to pick up Frozone with Fifteen Carat ($6) producing an eye-catcher to finish a nose back third after travelling deep throughout.

Bailey said Frozone was a considerably stronger horse this preparation who would improve further as he stepped up in distance.

"He was a bit weak last time in but he has strengthened nicely and filled out a bit," Bailey said.

"He's the sort of horse who can travel close to the lead in the longer races and sprint quickly.

"He's not a horse who can get well back, he needs pace on his races and that's why I think the better races he is in, the better horse he will be."

Bailey said he would avoid the top tier staying races during the winter and instead target the rung below in races like the Ipswich, Sunshine Coast and Grafton Cups.

Frozone has won six of his 17 starts with his victories ranging from 1200 to 2100 metres.

The disappointment of the race was the well supported Gag Order who started the $2.40 favourite and finished 10th, more than five lengths from the winner.

Stathi Katsidis said Fifteen Carat's effort was first class.

"He was three deep throughout and then I was flushed out earlier than I wanted when the one inside me pushed out at the 700 metres," Katsidis said.

"He went up to win in the straight but he died on his run about 50 metres out and he will improve a lot with that run under his belt."
