South Australian jumper Frenzilian will freshen up on the beach at Warrnambool after a mandatory trial to re-qualify him for the premier steeplechase races this season.
Jockey Steven Pateman will have his first ride on the six-year-old in a steeplechase trial at Warrnambool on Tuesday and trainer Heather Few will leave the gelding at the coastal town to round out his preparation for Saturday's St Steven Steeplechase (3200m) at Moonee Valley.
Frew's husband, Kevin, said it was felt that the Mount Gambier to Warrnambool return trip would be detrimental to Frenzilian's chances on Saturday and Brent Hollinshead would be the horse's caretaker trainer at Warrnambool for a week.
"The change in environment will be great for him and after the trial he can work on the beach all week," Frew said.
Pateman will use the trial to sound out Frenzilian as his St Steven's mount at Moonee Valley where the gelding is the reigning Jumper of the Year.
Last season Frenzilian raced over jumps at the Valley three times and after landing the Freightliner Hurdle (3200m) in May, he was twice beaten less than a length when second to Shrogginet in the Macdonald Steeplechase (3700m) and second to Some Are Bent in the Hiskens Steeplechase (3712m).
"It seems to be his course where there are pressure races," Frew said.
Last year Frenzilian was also placed in both the Grand National Hurdles at Flemington and Morphettville.
He re-qualified for hurdle racing in April and subsequently finished fourth at Yarra Glen before a gallant third to Desert Master in the Galleywood Hurdle at Warrnambool.
Frew said the Warrnambool trial should be just a formality for Frenzilian.
He said Frenzilian's heart wasn't in flat racing and he was a different horse when obstacles were put in front of him.
"He just wants to line up over those jumps," Frew said.
"We gave the Australian Steeplechase (3900m) a miss because we didn't want to go backwards in distance this week but after Saturday he will run in the Macdonald on July 11 and the Hiskens on July 25.
"Then, with the programming being a bit different this year, he can probably go to the Grand National Steeplechase at Sandown at the end of August."
Frenzilian is among 19 nominations for the St Steven which also heralds the return of comeback jumper Topzoff.
Wheel The Lead, New Zealander Spirit of Alaton, Danever, Father Patrick and Geeorb are also entered.
Frenzilian is also among 22 entries for the Ted Best Hurdle which includes Australian Hurdle winner Hooker Road.
