The much-anticipated debut of Foxwedge didn't quite go to plan but the youngster showed enough with his victory at Rosehill to suggest he could be a genuine Golden Slipper contender.

Sent out the $1.30 favourite in Saturday's Always Recycling Handicap (1100m) on the strength of an eight-length barrier trial win, the John O'Shea-trained colt was unable to get to the lead early and maintain it.

Mid-race he got past Dream Choice ($7) but relinquished the position rounding the turn.

Corey Brown worked hard on him in the straight and he overcame his rivals to win by 1-1/4 lengths from Borehead ($21).

Dream Choice was third of the six runners, 2-1/2 lengths behind the second placegetter.

"He's very, very green," Brown said of the winner.

"He began really well but from the alley (six) he got posted three wide.

"He's so new he didn't want to go away from them when he got there but in the end he knuckled down.

"He's all class."

O'Shea said Foxwedge would now be sent to the paddock for a short break before returning to begin his Golden Slipper campaign.

"He'll have about three weeks in the paddock then come back to get ready for the Slipper in April," O'Shea said.

"They made him work today but the main thing is he's on the board now.

"There is a lot of improvement in what he did today.

"He may have learnt more being ridden in behind the leader but it didn't work out that way.

"He is big in condition and will need to improve, but he will."

Foxwedge is by Fastnet Rock out of Forest Native and is owned by Edmund Bateman who paid $925,000 for the colt at this year's Easter sale.
