A plan to target the Pentax Plate for grey horses only some two months ago paid off for Newcastle trainer Alan Scorse when Looking Fur Lang led all the way at Flemington.

The former jockey said he looked through the programs and came up with the 1400m event restricted to 0-89 greys.

"I thought he was a straight horse but when I realised he needed 1400 metres I decided this would be a lovely race for him and it's turned out really good," Scorse said.

"He has good tactical speed which is in his favour."

The Langfuhr five-year-old last start won the Country Cup (1350m) at Cessnock by 4-3/4 lengths and lived up to that form to make it seven wins from 17 starts, and 13 wins from the first 25 races over the Melbourne Cup carnival for NSW-based trainers.

Ridden by Corey Brown, Looking Fur Lang ($6.50) kicked away in the straight and held on well by 1-1/4 lengths from the fast-finishing Laletta ($4.20 fav) with Idle Mac ($19) three-quarters of a length away third.

"It was the first time I've been on the horse's back. He ran off the course fairly badly on straightening, but it was probably good that he hadn't been here because he backed off with the tempo and didn't go so hard," Brown said.

"But it was a strong win. He was going as good on the line as he was on straightening."
