Trainer Patrick Payne's hopes of winning the Group One Queensland Derby soared when Victorian stayer Fieldmaster scored a commanding victory at Doomben.

Fieldmaster was only unloaded from his flight from Melbourne early on Wednesday and spent a few hours resting at Pat Duff's stables at Deagon, on Brisbane's northern outskirts, before he was back on a float for the short journey to Doomben.

The three-year-old, who was ridden by Danny Brereton, circled the field from last to score by 1-1/4 lengths in the www.brc.com.au Handicap (2240m).

Fieldmaster was bought as a tried horse in New Zealand by Payne's client Josh Xipell after having only two starts.

"Josh asked me if I could buy him a yearling. He wasn't interested in buying a tried horse until we saw him," Payne said.

"I owe a lot to his former trainer, Adrian Bull, who was setting him for the Queensland Derby before I got him."

Brereton gave Payne a glowing report and extra cause for confidence for the Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

"He relaxed and settled quite well and went to sleep before we went around them," Brereton said.

"He was always on the right leg."

Payne will prepare Fieldmaster, who looks set to just scrape into the Queensland Derby field, at his sister Bernadette's property at Murwillumbah in northern NSW.

"I was hoping he would run like that but I was a little worried how much the trip would take out of him," he said.

"He's foolproof and has got a bit of arrogance about him as we discovered at Caulfield last start."

The son of Black Minnaloushe confirmed his Queensland trip following his last-start second to the Peter Moody-trained Star Scream in a 2000-metre race for three-year-olds at Caulfield on May 22.

Payne won 18 Group One races as a jockey including the Cox Plate on Northerly in 2002 before he decided to take on training three years ago.

Meanwhile, trainer Lee Freedman plans to give promising youngster Pellizotti a chance at black-type level in Brisbane before the colt returns home to chase bigger spring spoils.

Pellizotti made a big impression at his first appearance since a spell with a runaway 1-1/2 length win in the Ambassador Travel Handicap (1030m).

It was the Stratum colt's first start since finishing fifth to Beneteau in the Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield in early February.

Freedman doubts whether Pellizotti will have the stamina to chase the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in October but has other suitable races in mind with him.

"I'm going to run him in a Listed race (Dalrello Plate) at Eagle Farm on Monday week and then the (Listed) Australia Post Stakes before I put him away for the spring," Freedman said.

"He's had a few setbacks and has been inactive with knee soreness which put him out of the Blue Diamond.

"I only brought him to Queensland to see if he will make the grade for the spring back home.

"I'm not sure about the Caulfield Guineas though. I doubt if he'll run 1600 metres.'
