Former Socceroo Scott Chipperfield may be living in Switzerland but he hopes to be playing a starring role at Doomben on Saturday.

Chipperfield is a part-owner of Buffering, second favourite for the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) and St Sully an outsider for the Group Three Grand Prix Stakes (2200m).

Buffering has recovered from a stone bruise and was an impressive worker at Doomben on Wednesday.

Trainer Rob Heathcote was content with Buffering drawing barrier 10 for the Doomben 10,000 and was pleasantly surprised to see St Sully make the Grand Prix field after it looked like the three-year-old would be balloted out.

St Sully is a $101 chance with TAB Sportsbet for the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9 and at long odds to even make the field, but Heathcote isn't giving up hope.

"I didn't think he would get in the Grand Prix but I'm delighted he has," Heathcote said.

"He's a half-brother to Sir Time Keeper who was a top horse in New Zealand and his sire, St Reims, won a New Zealand Derby.

"Scott (Chipperfield) has half a dozen horses with me. He lives in Basel in Switzerland and is playing in the Swiss league but he's retired from international football.

"I've never met him but he might be over if St Sully makes it to the Derby.

"I believe he likes a good time so I'm looking forward to meeting him."

St Sully won his maiden at Caloundra last month but has been beaten at his three provincial starts since, the past two at Ipswich.

"I know it's an enormous task to go from being beaten at Ipswich to the Grand Prix," Heathcote said.

"But he's a genuine 2400 metre horse and you need a genuine stayer to win the Grand Prix.

"The further the better with him."

Heathcote won the Grand Prix with Bell Academy in 2008 and believes St Sully is capable of a Grand Prix upset.

"He may lack a touch of class and is inexperienced but he'll stay all day," he said.

"He's been set for the Queensland Derby but he'll need to win the Grand Prix to get in."

Meanwhile Heathcote is confident Buffering won't let down his supporters.

"I'm happy with his barrier and fortunately we've got Adebisi drawn inside to cart him across," he said.

"His work was first class this morning and he'll acquit himself well."
