Trainer Greg Eurell believes Fire In The Night is well placed to snatch an early comeback win from a tendon injury.

Eurell said the five-year-old was attractively weighted with 53kg in Saturday's Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m), describing the Caulfield event as the right race at the right time for the gelding.

"I think it is a great weight for him," Eurell said.

"Getting under 55kg is a bonus and second-up over 1400 metres is probably the right distance before we bounce him to a mile (1600m)."

Fire In The Night pleased Eurell with his first-up fifth to Pinnacles in the Family Day Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on March 14.

It was his first run since suffering a 10 per cent tear of a tendon which needed A-cell treatment, a form of stem cell therapy.

"He had a lot of rehab and hadn't raced for 11 months, but I was happy with his first-up run," Eurell said.

"He didn't get the room he wanted but he was only beaten a couple of lengths."

Fire In The Night has won five of his 22 starts and is one of the favourites at $6.50 with TAB Sportsbet.

His rivals include Group One performers Pinnacles ($6.50), Zipping ($7), Riva San ($26), High Cee ($35), Douro Valley ($51) and Our Smoking Joe ($51).

A market reshuffle is likely as the Mick Price-trained Nine Tales heads the betting at $4.80 but is the fourth emergency for the race.

Falaise is at $5 with Skiddaw Peak next at $6.

While mindful of the strength of the opposition, Eurell said Fire In The Night had trained on well and jockey Chris Symons has stuck with the son of Danewin.

"He pulled up well after his first run and he is fitter and better for it," Eurell said.

He said Fire In The Night's next run would be the Listed Auckland Racing Club Handicap (1600m) at Flemington on Anzac Day.

"That was the race that was the undoing of him last year," Eurell said.

"He pulled out a super run that day (to finish a close fifth) and then we noticed a little bit of thickening of his tendon."
