The working relationship between jockey Greg Childs and trainer Mike Moroney spanning 26 years will come to an end at Flemington on Saturday.

Childs, 46, will retire after the meeting at which he has four rides, including two for Moroney.

He'll ride Butwaittheresmore in the Comic Court Handicap (2500m) and Papa in the Skipton Handicap (1600m) which be his final ride.

"He rode my first starter (Bold Avon at Matamata on September 19, 1982) which won at long odds," Moroney recalled.

"I didn't know him that well at the time but certainly we've had a long association and become close friends.

"My father-in-law actually owned the horse and he said if we could win the race he'd sell it and give me half so I sold it that night.

"He's got two nice rides for us and it would be great to see him win on one of them. They both look really good chances so hopefully things go alright."

Major wins for the jockey and trainer combination include the 1997 Victoria Derby with Second Coming, who led all-the-way to upset Tie The Knot, and Eskimo Queen in the 2007 Queensland Oaks.

"He's been very professional all the way through and we've had a lot of success together," Moroney said.

Papa gave apprentice Harry Hillier the second metropolitan winner of his career when he won over 1400m at Sandown on December 3.

"He won well first-up and appears to have trained on well," Moroney said.

"It looks a nice race. It's certainly a stronger field but he's still in nicely (with 56.5kg) and hopefully he can get the right trip."

Papa, by Hemingway, is out of Princess Pushy who won eight races, including the 1991 Group Two Herbert Power Handicap (2400m) at Caulfield with Childs in the saddle.

The five-year-old has won five and placed in four of 20 starts.

"He has a bit of speed but he does stay," Moroney said.

"We're looking at taking him across to Tasmania for the Hobart and Launceston Cups so we'll see how we go, but he showed last time in when runner-up over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley that he was going to be a stayer like his mother.

"He's come back stronger and we're hopeful he'll be in for a good campaign."

Butwaittheresmore has the blinkers back on after he finished on strongly but belatedly when third to Ladies In Luck in the Fileur Handicap (2440m) at Caulfield on December 10.

"The experiment of taking them off last time didn't quite work. Greg said he wouldn't take a gap and he got squeezed out of it, but once he got out he ran home strongly again," Moroney said.

"He looks quite well placed in this race with the blinkers back on to keep him focused. We were worried he was wanting to over-race with them on but without the blinkers he wouldn't grab the bit and take part."

Butwaittheresmore, who also ran third in the Lavazza Long Black (2800m) at Flemington and the Bendigo Cup (2400m), is scheduled to progress to the Listed Bagot Handicap (2500m) at Flemington on January 1.

Childs' other mounts at the meeting are last-start Caulfield runner-up Game Serena in the Bounty Hawk Handicap (2000m) for Camperdown trainer Ron Gravett and Mr Hearst in the Shaftesbury Handicap (1400m) for Flemington trainer Dean Lawson.
