Brilliant sprinter Eight Bills is set to give Dean Yendall a feature win in the Listed Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool on Wednesday.

Yendall, 36, returned to race riding with one mount at Sandown on April 28 and had four rides at Sandown on Sunday to fit himself for Warrnambool.

The Horsham-based jockey set himself to be back for Warrnambool after he suffered breaks to both wrists and a broken collarbone in a race fall at Launceston on February 14.

At the time he was leading the Victorian country jockeys' premiership and was second on the overall Victorian jockeys' premiership with 68 wins for the season.

He has been riding trackwork for Jeff and Leah Rogers at Ararat, Greg Baker at Horsham and Gary Portelli at Flemington.

"My fitness hasn't got there yet but that will come," Yendall said.

One of his trackwork mounts for the Portelli stable was Eight Bills who he has ridden five times in races for four wins including city successes at Moonee Valley (twice) and Caulfield - and a third placing.

"I'm looking forward to riding him in the Wangoom and Bourbonstreetblues in the (Warrnambool) Cup (on Thursday). I've got plenty of rides over the three days," Yendall said.

Mark Zahra warmed the saddle for Yendall last start when Eight Bills won impressively from Al's Best Mate when he resumed over 1000m at Sandown on April 24.

The Octagonal four-year-old has won six of his seven starts to date and will carry 55kg, 2kg above the minimum, in what is the first running of the $100,000 Wangoom as a Listed race.

The only thing that worries stable foreman Troy Portelli is the forecast for rain as he said the gelding was better on top of the ground despite him being unbeaten in two slow track outings and winning at his only run on a dead surface last start.

Eight Bills is unbeaten in five 1000m runs but Portelli said stepping up to 1200 metres was not a problem.

"I've trained him to get to the 1200 metres for the Wangoom and he was strong on the line last start so I don't think it will be a worry," Portelli said.

A Sale 1206m winner and unluckily beaten when third at Bendigo over 1300m earlier in his career, Eight Bills has drawn barrier nine in what looks a strong line-up of 16 runners plus four emergencies.

Mick Price, fresh from winning the Group One Goodwood with Velocitea on Sunday at Morphettville, will saddle up topweight Gran Sasso who drew barrier 17 and will be ridden by Steven Arnold.

Danny Nikolic rides last year's winner Arch Symbol, prepared at Warrnambool by Bill and Symon Wilde, who goes into the race first-up and has also drawn out in gate 18.
