Trainer John Gosden recorded a memorable double on Saturday as Duncan dead-heated with Jukebox Jury in the Irish St Leger after stablemate Masked Marvel won the English equivalent at Doncaster.

The Mark Johnston-trained Melbourne Cup aspirant Jukebox Jury showed tremendous courage to rally into a strong headwind at the Curragh to level with Duncan.

Another Melbourne Cup hopeful, Red Cadeaux was a well beaten third.

Johnny Murtagh set out to make all the running on Johnston's grey and Eddie Ahern never let him out of his sights with odds-on favourite Fame And Glory just behind.

Jamie Spencer was soon sending out distress signals on the market leader though and it was left to the other two to provide a thrilling finish and there was nothing between them as they crossed the line.

"It feels really good to win my first Classic," Ahern said.

"I thought I'd won it and I gave my horse a pat so I felt a bit stupid for an hour, but at least I didn't get beat. Johnny even came up to me and said well done.

"When I saw the camera on him though, I thought I'd got beat. It was such a good finish and to come out second, I would have been gutted.

"Well done to Mr Gosden, it's been a great day for him."

Masked Marvel gave Gosden his fourth English St Leger when he won the world's oldest Classic in a record three minute 0.44 seconds.

"From the first day I saw him as a yearling at Deauville, I just thought he was that type," said Gosden.

"He was a powerful little guy then and he's got a great pedigree for this job.

"He's done nothing wrong all his life and he won well at Goodwood and was confused by Epsom but came back well at the July meeting.

"His owner (Bjorn Nielsen) allowed me to back off him and come here nice and fresh so we had a lovely horse for the autumn.

"To win the oldest Classic with this horse is what we've planned for about two years - sometimes it works."
