Golden Slipper runner-up Decision Time is the omen tip at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

The three-year-old will line up in the Up And Coming Stakes on the same day Australians go to the polls for the federal election.

"If you're looking for omens, what is Saturday?" trainer Clarry Conners said after watching the gelding being put through his paces by race jockey Hugh Bowman at trackwork on Thursday.

"It's decision time in parliament, isn't it. It's election day. He's the omen tip."

Conners designed a deliberate plan to start Decision Time second-up in the Up And Coming (1200m) on his home track with the view to then chasing the $1 million Group One Golden Rose on a seven-day back-up with fitness on his side.

And while slightly disappointed with Decision Time's first-up third in the San Domenico Stakes (1000m), the trainer believes he is right on target for Saturday and also the Golden Rose.

"The horse has done great," Conners said.

"Hugh (Bowman) came out and rode him this morning and said he gave him a great feel.

"I'm very happy with him and the whole plan has been to run in this and then run him in the (Golden) Rose."

Decision Time didn't finish worse than second in six starts as a two-year-old which included victory in the Black Opal Stakes at Canberra and seconds in the Todman Stakes and Golden Slipper.

He resumed in the San Domenico on August 7 at Randwick and finished 3-1/4 lengths third to fillies Obsequious and Solar Charged.

"I was a little bit disappointed, he didn't sprint quickly," Conners said.

"But he's that type of horse, he's very easy going.

"We thought they were going to go hard in the race and they didn't.

"We thought we'd be able to sit back and sprint home but Stathi (Katsidis) came back and said he could have led.

"He went back like I asked him to, that's OK, but the pace of the race was against him."

A field of 16 will contest the Up And Coming with Decision Time coming up with a favourable draw in barrier two.

Champagne Stakes winner Skilled will make his first three-year-old appearance from barrier six while the Gai Waterhouse-trained Brightexpectations drew out in gate 11.

Conners said the step up to 1200 metres would suit Decision Time and would also enhance his fitness levels ahead of the season's first Group One over 1400 on August 28.

"He needs it and if you have a look, a lot of the horses will be going into the Golden Rose second-up," he said.

"My plan was to go into the Rose third-up. That will be perfect."
