Bede Murray has the Group One Victoria Derby in his sights with Darci Be Good after the colt scored a strong win in the Listed Fernhill Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.

Murray quickly ruled out next week's Group One Champagne Stakes over the same 1600m course because he wants to send the colt for a spell and then prepare him for the Derby in the spring.

He knows what it takes to prepare a Derby winner, having trained Universal Prince to win the 2001 AJC Australian Derby, Half Hennessy to win the 2003 Queensland Derby and Coniston Bluebird to win the 2009 New Zealand Derby.

"I think he could be a Derby colt, I really do," Murray said.

"He's a lovely horse and has a lovely temperament."

Darci Be Good ($7) was ridden by Black Caviar's jockey Luke Nolen who elected to slide forward from the 800-metre mark with the speed of the race "only pedestrian".

He hit the front going up the rise and held off the finish of Cocky Raider ($4) who covered plenty of ground to win by 1-1/4 lengths in the heavy conditions.

Murray also prepared the third placegetter Continental Flyer ($13), who hit the line well to finish another length away.

"I was pretty confident with both of them," Murray said.

"I was hoping they could run one-two.

"They are both going out now and I think they'll make really nice staying three-year-olds."

Darci Be Good was offered at last year's Australian Easter Yearling Sale but was passed in for $50,000 after failing to make his $60,000 reserve.

Murray approached owner and breeder Scott Williams and asked if he could lease the colt.

"He was happy to let me lease him and I spoke to a few people and the Illawarra Turf Club formed a syndicate," Murray said.

The colt carried the colours of the Illawarra Turf Club to victory on Saturday.

David Payne said Cocky Raider, who raced wide and made a long run around the field, would back up in the Champagne Stakes.

"With a better run I think he wins," Payne said.
