Lightly-raced five-year-old Custodian has much to live up to and he is doing it style.
Trained by Tom Dabernig, the gelding posted his sixth win in nine starts when jockey Matt Pumpa urged him home 1-1/4 lengths ahead of Jeteven with Johnny Fiasco a long neck away third in Saturday's Le Pine Funerals Cup (1000m) at Sandown.
Dabernig's grandfather was the legendary trainer Colin Hayes and Custodian has strong links with two of Lindsay Park's past Melbourne Cup winners, hence his name.
His sire Jeune won the 1994 Melbourne Cup for Dabernig's uncle David Hayes while Colin Hayes trained 1986 Melbourne Cup winner At Talaq who is the sire of On Any Deal, the dam of Custodian.
Dabernig's father Arthur, who married Hayes' eldest daughter Jan, bred Custodian.
Arthur Dabernig once said: "I named him Custodian because he is the keeper of a great family history."
Tom Dabernig has for much of his life helped educate horses at Lindsay Park and also worked for the stable at Euroa.
He has trained a small team of gallopers for the last five years.
Custodian, who has also won three city races in Adelaide, is the only horse Dabernig has in work while he also plays a role for David Hayes as his assistant trainer.
Dabernig, who is holidaying at Robe in South Australia, wasn't at Sandown, leaving the race day duty of saddling up Custodian to Hayes' racing manager Gary Fennessy.
Fennessy predicted more wins ahead for Custodian who last start had his first Victorian city start at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day and finished sixth to Ahdashim.
"He is a very consistent horse and in another one of these races he will be hard to beat again," Fennessy said.
"He is a real family affair and a pretty good galloper."
