John Singleton's dream of owning a Melbourne Cup winner may rest with Joe Blow as Tuesday Joy battles to get fit in time for the race.

The Bart Cummings-trained Joe Blow resumed with a solid third over 1400 metres at Randwick on Saturday while Tuesday Joy was back at Gai Waterhouse's stable after an injury scare.

Tuesday Joy was taken to Randwick Equine Centre on Friday for precautionary x-rays to a leg amid fears she had done some damage but she was soon cleared.

Of more concern is her lack of fitness with Singleton's racing manager Duncan Grimley admitting the road back after a trip to Dubai has been hard.

"We sent her back to Gai a bit fatter than usual," Grimley said.

"The trip away and the quarantine means it has taken longer to get her fit.

"We'll discuss with Gai whether we go to the Theo Marks next Saturday or wait for the George Main but if we are to get to the Cup we need to get going.

"If not there's always next year."

This year can be a reality for Joe Blow if the plans of Bart Cummings come to fruition.

A five-year-old son of Sadler's Wells, Joe Blow has raced just 11 times for two wins over 1550 and 1800 metres.

"He's got to win a couple of races to get into the Cups and the Metropolitan looks like a nice one for him to do it," Cummings said.

"For a first-up run I thought it was pretty good and I think he is a talented stayer in the making."

The Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) is at Randwick on October 3 and is also a likely target for the Lee Freedman-trained Speed Gifted, an impressive winner at Flemington on Saturday.

Joe Blow's dam is Strawberry Girl, a daughter of Singleton's champion racehorse Strawberry Road who has been inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

Cummings was also happy with the second-up run of AJC Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor who ran home well for fifth in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), 3-1/2 lengths from the winner O'Lonhro.

"He's coming along pretty nicely," Cummings said.

Despite her lack of racing, Tuesday Joy remains a $26 chance in the Melbourne Cup with Irish mare Profound Beauty and Saturday's Flemington winner Vigor equal favourites at $11 on TAB Sportsbet.

Joe Blow is a $41 chance with Cummings' 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed at $17 along with Roman Emperor while another stablemate Precedence is a $26 chance.
