Zabeel colt Precedence will attempt to give legendary trainer Bart Cummings his eighth VRC St Leger and his 17th St Leger over all at Flemington on Saturday.

The Zabeel colt was a maiden until his seventh start where he beat St Leger rival Bellabaci by half a length in the Galilee Series Final (2390m) at Caulfield on Easter Saturday.

"He's flying, I can't fault him," said Cummings Melbourne stable foreman Reg Fleming.

"He's a lovely horse, he has a good temperament. He's probably six months away but he's going the right way at the moment."

"The plan is to try and get him qualified for the cups and tip him out."

Peter Mertens, who rode Precedence in that win, retains the mount and will be after his second VRC St Leger having won the race on Big Pat in 2001.

Precedence races in the Dato Tan Chin Nam colours made famous by 1996 Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup winner Saintly, 2008 Brisbane and Melbourne Cup winner Viewed and 2005 VRC St Leger winner Accumulate.

The colt is also part-owned by his breeder Sir Patrick Hogan and The Dowager Duchess Of Bedford.

Twelve-time Melbourne Cup winning trainer, Cummings first won the time-honoured VRC St Leger, first run in 1857, with Herminia in 1974.

Cummings has also won eight SAJC St Legers and one AJC St Leger.

This year's edition of the Listed 2800m race has attracted 15 entries including the David Hayes-trained pair, Zabeel colt Berlioz, who was narrowly beaten by Markus Maximus when runner-up in the Group One WATC Derby at Ascot on April 11, and maiden Baker Heart, a colt by Ice Point.

Also among the nominations is the Murray and Bjorn Baker-trained Kilimanjaro gelding Bakup, who has won three races in New Zealand, and Giant's Causeway filly Celtic Courage, prepared by Diane Poidevin-Laine, who ran ninth to Daffodil in the Australian Oaks at Randwick, last Saturday.

Danny O'Brien has nominated Zabeel filly Bellacaci; Buffet, who ran 10th to the Cummings-trained Roman Emperor in the Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 11; and last-start Moonee Valley 2040m maiden winner Pentire Point.
