Bart Cummings and long-time friend and client Dato'Tan Chin Nam are not only eyeing their fourth Melbourne Cup together, they are planning for next year as well.

The two octogenarians will be at Caulfield on Saturday to cheer Viewed home in the Caulfield Cup and 25 minutes later will be watching the action in the Tattersalls Club Cup at Randwick.

The Listed race is over 2400 metres, the same as the Caulfield Cup, with Book Of Kells and Zazabeau representing Cummings and Dato'Tan who have used the race as a successful stepping-stone to a Melbourne Cup start in the past.

Zazabeau will be backing up from his second at Warwick Farm on Wednesday while Book Of Kells can earn a trip to Melbourne if he wins.

"If Book Of Kells wins then he will more than likely go to Melbourne for the Saab which would get him into the Melbourne Cup," Dato'Tan's racing manager Duncan Ramage said.

"Zazabeau has pulled up very well and the intention is to back up from Warwick Farm.

"But even if he won the Tatts Cup, this year's Melbourne Cup would be too much.

"The most important thing is that if he did win, then that would qualify him for next year's Cup."

Grandmaster (1997) and Perpetual Check a year later represented Cummings and Dato'Tan in the Melbourne Cup but could not match the winning feats of Think Big (1974 and 1975) and Saintly in 1996.

Zazabeau is a full-brother to Zazabelle who ran third in the 1999 Melbourne Cup won by stablemate Rogan Josh, Cummings' 11th and most recent winner.

Zazabeau missed the chance to run in the AJC Australian Derby earlier this year when he suffered a slight injury to his hock in the float on the way to the track.

Book Of Kells did start and ran ninth of 16 after earning a berth with his win in the Tulloch Stakes.

At his fourth and most recent start this campaign Book Of Kells ran fifth in the Group One Metropolitan Handicap.

"Book Of Kells is a proven Group performer and if he wins the Tattersalls Cup then the Saab is probably the way to go for him," Ramage said.

The winner of the Saab Quality (2500m) on November 1 gains automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup (3200m) three days later.

Viewed was a late scratching from the Yalumba Stakes when he got a hind foot caught in the barrier but he recovered well and was passed fit to start in the Caulfield Cup.

Dato'Tan was on Thursday on his way to Australia from his home in Kuala Lumpur and plans to stay in Australia for the next month.

Cummings' son Anthony has Galileo's Daughter in the Tattersalls Cup and she is also still in the Melbourne Cup, as is Lang who is trained by David Payne.

Lang, who ran third in the Sydney Cup, needs to win to try to gain a penalty to elevate him in the Melbourne Cup order of entry.
