The need to get Sarge In Charge on a rain-affected track has prompted Brisbane trainer Liam Birchley to look south with the three-year-old who will line up at Randwick on Saturday.

Birchley said Sarge In Charge was in need of a wet track to produce his best and has entered him for a Benchmark 85 handicap (1000m).

Rain in Sydney on Tuesday night confirmed the trip for Sarge In Charge.

"He is going down (to Sydney)," Birchley said.

"It's good to know what I'm doing now."

The son of Golan will be floated from Brisbane on Thursday night and Birchley believes the 1000m and big Randwick track will be suitable.

Sarge In Charge has had five starts so far this preparation without a win, and only one placing when first-up, but Birchley is adamant he is going well.

"He's just desperate for a wet track," Birchley said.

"The wetter the better for him."

Interestingly, Sarge In Charge's two wins in his 16-start career have been on good tracks with his most recent victory in October last year.

The gelding's wet track form includes a strong second in a high-class 1000m 3YO Plate at Eagle Farm first-up this preparation on April 24.

"That was in really good company," Birchley said.

"He drew wide that day and was back second last on straightening. He came down the outside fence and nearly won."

Temple Of Boom, who stayed right along the fence while others raced wide, was the winner of the race while quality fillies Graceful Anna (third) and Paprika (fourth) finished behind Sarge In Charge.

"He's very capable, he just needs the conditions to suit," Birchley said.

"His form looks patchy but he can't handle firm tracks and it's hard to put a preparation together for him."

Birchley was yet to find a rider for Sarge In Charge who has the limit of 53kg.
