Jockey Glen Colless will be given the freedom to devise tactics to overcome another bad barrier for talented mare Zero Rock at Eagle Farm.

For the fourth time in six starts this campaign, Zero Rock has drawn poorly on Saturday but trainer Kelso Wood doesn't expect it to dent her record when she lines up in the Kedron-Wavell Services Club Handicap (1200m).

The four-year-old mare continued her horror run with barriers when she drew gate 11 in the field of 13 which includes interstate visitors Sarthemare, Beyonce's Star and Miss Reed.

The trio have been enticed to run by a lucrative purse of $100,000.

Colless has never ridden Zero Rock but gets his chance after receiving a call-up from Wood to replace successful last-start rider, apprentice Michael Hellyer.

Regular jockey Brad Pengelly would normally ride Zero Rock but he will be in Sydney to partner Queenslander Albert The Fat in the Group Three Tramway Handicap (1400m) at Randwick.

"We can't claim on her so I booked Glen when I knew Brad would be in Sydney," Wood said.

"She's got a big weight with 58 kilos but it will be up to Glen if he wants to lead on her.

"She can take a sit and with that sort of weight I wouldn't imagine she'll lead but I'll leave it up to Glen how he wants to ride her.

"Except for her last start when she had the rails, she hasn't drawn a decent barrier this campaign."

Zero Rock has been in the best form of her career this campaign but the astute Wood has decided against a trip to Sydney with the daughter of Danzero.

"She'll probably have a break after this run or there's another race worth $100,000 coming up in a fortnight," he said.

"I looked at a few races for her in the south but what's the point taking her away when we've got races with this sort of prizemoney here.

"It's very expensive to take a horse away and things can go wrong.

"She's only lightly raced and has had only 11 starts so there's plenty of time for her to go away next year.

"At this stage we're just looking at the Magic Millions Cup with her."

Wood believes the weight factor could prove Zero Rock's biggest hurdle.

"Liam Birchley's horse (Guissepino) ran a good race to finish second to her when they last met and with 53 kilos she looks our biggest danger," he said.

"There's a few others there from interstate which have good form as well."

Wood has only a small team of 10 horses in work but his strike rate is among the best in Queensland.

The Danny Williams-trained Sarthemare faces a steep rise in class after scoring impressively at her first start for the stable at Doomben last month.

Michael Cahill retains the ride on Sarthemare while Larry Cassidy partners the Kris Lees-trained Beyonce's Star who won at Canterbury in June and Rosehill in July before her last-start third to Nediyms Dream over 1300 metres at Rosehill last month.

Tamworth mare Miss Reed, a Jason Taylor mount, has won only twice from 16 starts and is coming off a last-start third at Grafton on July 19.
