Jockey Chris Munce has been granted a licence to ride by Racing NSW despite facing serious charges issued by the Hong Kong Jockey Club over the tips for bets scandal.

Munce was released from Sydney's Silverwater Prison last Thursday week after serving 20 months of a 30 month sentence handed down by the Hong Kong judiciary.

The jockey was arrested by Hong Kong anti-corruption officials in July 2006 with $HK250,000 (about $A40,000) in his jeans pocket along with a piece of paper with notations allegedly relating to bets on races in which he had tipped.

Hong Kong Jockey Club stipendiary stewards opened an inquiry into the affair last week with Munce giving evidence by video link.

They subsequently issued 36 charges against the jockey with the hearing to continue next week.

In Australia, Munce's offences would have been dealt with by racing authorities not the judicial system.
