Jim Byrne added some extra spice to the battle for Brisbane's riding honours with a winning double as premiership rivals Stathi Katsidis and Larry Cassidy went winless at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Katsidis will carry a one-win lead over Cassidy into the season's final meeting at Doomben on Saturday while Byrne's double took him to 68 wins, four wins in arrears.

Byrne has won the Brisbane premiership three times but will need at least four winners at Doomben and hope Cassidy fails to ride a winner to claim his fourth title.

In the advent of a deadlock the premiership will be decided on countback to second placings, a bizarre ruling according to Cassidy.

If Byrne can ride four winners and Cassidy none, he'll claim the title as he's got a far superior number of second placings than Katsidis.

Byrne's winners came from the Bryan Guy-trained We Are Happy in the XXXX Gold Handicap (1400m) and Patinack Farm's Web Of Love in the Carlton Mid Handicap (1600m).

Katsidis, who is striving to win the jockeys' premiership for a third time, will miss the Doomben meeting to partner AJC Australian Derby winner Shoot Out in the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Byrne's hopes of winning the premiership look forlorn but he hasn't given up hope.

"I'm still a chance," Byrne said.

"I'm ridden four winners in a day quite a few times and so long as I'm standing I'm a rough chance."

"I've got a good book of rides on Saturday and anything can happen."

Byrne has figured in the top three in the Brisbane premiership for the past 15 years, apart from the two seasons he spent riding under contract to Barry Baldwin in Macau.

Katsidis was not overly worried that he finished without a winner.

"I'm happy to go into the last meeting one win ahead of Larry," Katsidis said.

"I wanted to finish the day at least one win in front of him and I've managed to do that now.

"Larry will have to ride two winners to beat me and Jim has to ride four."

Cassidy has a full book of rides at Doomben and will claim a moral victory if he can draw level on wins with Katsidis.

He is confident he can claim the title in Katsidis' absence but was highly critical of the countback ruling.

"If I finish level I'll count it as a win," Cassidy said.

"As far as I'm concerned the premiership is for wins and has nothing to do with the number of seconds.

"If a horse had 10 starts for 10 seconds then it's still a maiden.

"It's bizarre."

The meeting was marred by a fall by apprentice Jason Kropp who was dislodged from the Trevor Miller-trained Rascal at the 600 metres of the Cellarbrations Handicap (1000m).

Kropp was momentarily knocked unconscious but recovered quickly and was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital for X-rays and observation after complaining of a sore shoulder.
