Trainer Barry Baldwin will try for a third time to send Burdekin Blues to Melbourne for the Group One Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday week.

Baldwin cancelled Burdekin's Blue's flight to Melbourne on Monday after discovering the gelding had a minor leg injury which scans later cleared of serious damage.

"We were worried yesterday but it's not so bad today," Baldwin said.

"He had swelling in his near front pastern in an area which can be quite serious.

"I've had both his front legs scanned and x-rayed and everything came up clear.

"It looks like it's only superficial as the swelling went down quickly after some treatment."

Baldwin has tried twice to no avail to get Burdekin Blue to Melbourne for his autumn carnival campaign.

He originally planned to send him south by float last week but cancelled the trip because of heatwave conditions in Victoria and now hopes to organise a flight for the son of Sequalo early next week.

Baldwin is unsure how Burdekin Blues hurt his leg.

"His leg is about 70 per cent right and you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with it today," Baldwin said.

"He's been on bute (phenylbutazone) which he can have as the race is still a fair way off.

"I'm not sure how he hurt the leg but it could have happened when he worked at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

"He may have put his foot down awkwardly."

Burdekin Blues worked anti-clockwise over 800 metres with Lightning Stakes jockey Shane Scriven aboard.

The Lightning Stakes is down the straight at Flemington but Baldwin gave Burdekin Blues experience racing the opposition direction with a view to extending his Melbourne campaign.

Baldwin is undecided if Burdekin Blues will extend his campaign to include either the Group One William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley (1200m) or Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield next month or head to Sydney.

Burdekin Blues hasn't raced in Melbourne since he won the Grazia Stakes (1100m) down the straight at Flemington on Oaks Day in November.

The gelding has started only twice since, winning the Group Three George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben last month before his sizzling win in the 900-metre Bat Out Of Hell Quality at the Gold Coast on January 2.
