Star Queensland sprinter Burdekin Blues has been retired after pulling up lame following his failure at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Burdekin Blues faded to finish seventh to The Jackal in a 1200-metre open sprint after showing blistering speed to lead from a wide barrier under his big weight of 61 kilograms.

The six-year-old was in contention for a trip to Sydney for next month's Group Two Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill, a race he won two years ago.

"It's sad. He's the second good horse I've lost in the past few years," Baldwin said.

"La Montagna won a Stradbroke for me but she never won a race again after she put a foot through a rail in Melbourne."

Baldwin said the decision to retire Burdekin Blues was made by her northern Queensland owner Tom Sheahan.

"There was a chance he could keep racing but Tom made the correct decision and decided to retire him," Baldwin said.

"He's had a lot of problems all his life and this was just the latest.

"He pulled up sore on Sunday morning in the off front leg which was the same leg he had an operation on last year.

"He also was a bit tender in the near side back leg and it just wasn't fair on the horse to keep him going."

Baldwin said Burdekin Blues had done a remarkable job considering the number of problems that had plagued his career.

"He's always had a soft palate and has had leg problems since he was an early two-year-old," he said.

"He also had a slightly bowed tendon as a young horse and considering all that he did a fantastic job."

Burdekin Blues finished his career with 11 wins and five placings from 22 starts and earned more than $678,000 prize money.

His best wins were the Expressway Stakes and Group Three George Moore Stakes at Eagle Farm in 2009.

He also won the Listed Grazia Style (1100m) at Flemington the same year.
