Trainer Barry Baldwin is praying forecast rain won't eventuate ahead of Burdekin Blue's test to confirm a Melbourne trip at Eagle Farm.

Burdekin Blues will sew up a trip south for the Melbourne autumn carnival if he's successful in his comeback in Saturday's Waipara Hills Wines Handicap (1000m).

Burdekin Blues, a Larry Cassidy mount, has won five times from nine starts but hasn't raced since winning a 1200-metre Class Six Plate at Eagle Farm in August.

Baldwin has a big opinion of the four-year-old who has been in work for three months but doesn't want to see a wet track for the son of Sequalo.

"He's won in the wet but he's half the horse when he's not on top of the ground," Baldwin said.

"He's a good track horse and I think he's pretty smart.

"If he wins on Saturday he'll go down for the Newmarket.

"Now that he's drawn barrier three I've only got the weather to sorry about."

Baldwin has taken out some insurance against the possibility of a wet track by accepting with him in the Asthma Community School Handicap (1110m) at Doomben on Monday.

Stablemates Simplest and Nericon King have also been entered for the Australia Day meeting as they bid to accompany Burdekin Blues to Melbourne.

The three have all been nominated for the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in March.

Burdekin Blues was rated a potential Group winner by jockey Danny Nikolic during last year's Brisbane winter carnival following a four-length win in restricted grade at Eagle Farm in June.

Baldwin rates Burdekin Blues the superior sprinter of the trio and plans to start him for the first time interstate in the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 21.

"The Oakleigh Plate isn't a particularly good race for him as it's at Caulfield," he said.

"He'll be better at Flemington and I think he's more than capable of measuring up down there.

"If he doesn't run in the Oakleigh for some reason then there's a few other options before the Newmarket."

Baldwin has ruled out the Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday week as an option as it is too soon after his comeback.
