Talented three-year-old Buffering showed he was on course for a big spring in Sydney with a convincing comeback win at Eagle Farm.

Buffering, having his first start since finishing third to Pressday in the Group Two Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben in May, made it five wins from six starts with a 1-1/4-length victory over Slice And Dice in Wednesday's Mirvac Hotels & Resorts Handicap (1000m).

Trainer Rob Heathcote had planned to send Buffering interstate for last Saturday's Group Three San Domenico Stakes at Randwick but decided to stay at home because of Sydney's wet tracks.

However, Heathcote's plans were further thrown into turmoil after heavy rain in Brisbane on Tuesday ensured a heavy track for Eagle Farm.

"I was reluctant to start him with 59.5 kilos on a heavy track first-up but in the end I had no alternative," Heathcote said.

"But it helps when you have a rider like Glen Colless on them.

"It was a big ask for him to carry that weight first-up and any horse who can do it must be above average.

"He'll go down now and run in the Up And Coming Stakes and the series of races for three-year-olds."

The Group Three Up And Coming Stakes (1200m) will be run at Warwick Farm on Saturday week.

Heathcote refused to rule out extending Buffering's spring campaign to Melbourne for a possible tilt at the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day, October 30.

Heathcote is yet to engage a rider for Buffering in Sydney but regular rider Larry Cassidy has first refusal.

"Nothing is set in concrete yet but I've got Fillydelphia running at Doomben that day and I expect Larry will probably ride her," Heathcote said.

"If that's the case then Danny Nikolic will probably ride Buffering in the Up And Coming."

Buffering is part-owned by former Socceroos Craig Moore, Scott Chipperfield and Zelko Kalac.

Colless was full of praise for Buffering's spirited victory.

"As soon as I asked him he gave something extra," Colless said.

"He's a tough little bugger and is definitely up to Sydney standard.

"Once they started to come at him in the straight he showed the fight in him."
