Victorian Premier John Brumby says Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) has made the right decision to continue with jumps racing.

RVL announced on Monday that jumps racing would continue for the rest of the season under strict conditions, pending a broader review.

Mr Brumby said he supported the decision and it was not for the government to interfere in racing matters.

"I think what they've done is make it a lot safer ... I think they've listened to the community," Mr Brumby told Fairfax Radio.

The sport was reviewed after five horses died in the first 10 days of the season.

Mr Brumby said jumps racing had been held successfully in country communities for more than a century and continuing the tradition was the right decision.

He said while the images of horses falling and being killed during competition were "very distressing", the RVL had to consider all sides of the debate.

"RVL's made, I think, the right decision, it's the right decision for country communities," he said.

"They have made a number of decisions to make this a much, much safer event for the horses and for the public.

"There are strict limits now on who can jump, there are strict limits on the training that trainers must have undertaken and the jockeys must have undertaken, they've removed that last jump ... they're slowing the races down."
