Broken will be on trial for a start in the Group Three Standish Handicap when he resumes at Flemington on Saturday against Group One-winning colt Toorak Toff.

Ballarat trainer Darren Weir had Broken ready to resume over 1100m at Caulfield two weeks ago but he was scratched on race morning.

"He had a bit of heat in a leg but he's right now," Weir said.

"We're looking at the Standish depending on how he goes tomorrow. If he runs well that's the way we will go."

The Halo Homewrecker gelding hasn't raced since being edged out when a long head runner-up to Dubleanny in the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on June 12.

He was third to Avenue in the Group Three Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley as a three-year-old.

"He's a neat enough horse," Weir said of the $20,000 weanling purchase who has been very consistent, winning four of his 12 starts and finishing out of a place just twice.

Later syndicated for $50,000, Broken has so far returned more than $160,000 in prizemoney to connections.

Broken will carry 54kg in Saturday's Red Tempo Hcp (1000m) which is 4.5kg below weight-for-age for a four-year-old, while Toorak Toff's 59kg is 4.5kg above weight-for-age for a three-year-old.

Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy is also aiming Toorak Toff at the $200,000 Standish (1200m) at Flemington on New Year's Day.

The Golden Rose (1400m) winner will then head to Queensland for the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 15.

The Show A Heart colt will then return to Melbourne where his ultimate aim will be the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5.

Hore-Lacy said the colt may also go to Sydney for the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) a week later.

Toorak Toff, whose last start was when a luckless fourth to Anacheeva in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in October, is unbeaten in two first-up runs.

But Hore-Lacy has warned that he could find the 1000m too short for him even though he won the Listed Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield first-up in the spring, beating Soul and Star Witness.

"He's a very good horse, everybody knows that, but it is 1000 metres and he's a three-year-old with 59 kilograms which is six above the limit," he said.

"Then again it's probably just an ordinary Saturday handicap but, for what it's worth, I'm not having anything on him because I think they might just go a little bit too quickly for him.

"I would have thought he'd be a better chance in the Standish in a fortnight's time than perhaps on Saturday.

"But good horses can sometimes do things you think they can't do."

Ben Melham will ride Broken for the first time in a race on Saturday while Craig Newitt is the new rider for Toorak Toff.

Broken is $3.30 favourite with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Toorak Toff at $4.40, Secret Flyer ($5), Eclair Mystic ($7.50) and Happy Glen at $9.
