The forecast heatwave conditions at Rosehill on Saturday are expected to rob the Group Two Expressway Stakes of at least one runner - Utzon.

The eight-race program has been put back more than an hour and will start at 2:30pm (AEDT), with temperatures at nearby Parramatta expected to hover around 36 degrees.

And that would be hot enough for trainer Les Bridge to scratch multiple stakeswinner Utzon from the 1200-metre feature.

The Randwick horseman wants to aim the 2006 Villiers Stakes (1600m) winner at the $2 million Doncaster Mile in April and doesn't want to risk flattening him in the heat.

Utzon has not raced since his fifth to Hairy in the Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on New Year's Day and Bridge is now eyeing off the Clissold Stakes (1200m) at Randwick next week.

"They've forecast 36 degrees and with the high humidity on top of that I would say he's very unlikely to run," Bridge said.

"If it's as bad as they are saying then we'll go to the Clissold because I won't have to float him there.

"He hasn't got the dash to go with this lot and it could knock him around too much and I'm looking at the Doncaster with him."

Utzon was given a couple of barrier trials last month and Bridge is pleased with the eight-year-old.

"The trials have him ticking over nicely and he looks set for a good campaign," Bridge said.

Utzon missed the 2007 Sydney autumn carnival through injury after a stellar 2006 when he claimed the Villiers and the Group Three Liverpool City Cup (1200m) as well as the Listed Festival Stakes (1400m).

He finished fourth in the 2005 Doncaster Handicap behind the Guy Walter-trained trifecta of Patezza, Court's In Session and Danni Martine.

Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy said the Rosehill meeting could be further delayed if need be.

"We'll just assess the situation on the day, if we deem the conditions to be dangerous at the time of the first race we have the power to set it back even further," Murrihy said.

Officials will use the wet bulb method, which also measures humidity, to monitor conditions and Murrihy said the 35 degree mark is when stewards start to look seriously at whether racing should go ahead.

Stewards used the method at Randwick on January 24 when the reading climbed to 34.1.

"The pattern in the western suburbs has been that it starts to cool down around that 2:30pm period and we're hoping that's the case on Saturday," Murrihy said.

TAB Sportsbet has star Queensland sprinter Burdekin Blues as $2.50 favourite for the Expressway ahead of last year's Group Three Cameron Handicap winner Raheeb at $4.80.

Multiple stakeswinner Gallant Tess is on the third line of betting after being backed from $6 to $5 ahead of last-start Canterbury Classic (1100m) winner Gold Trail ($6).

Three-time Group One winner Mentality has been well supported, from $10 to $8, ahead of Group winner Hurried Choice at $9 while Utzon is rated a $14 chance.
