Prolific Group One-winning Sydney jockey Glen Boss is set make an immediate impact at Moonee Valley on Saturday following his relocation to Melbourne.

Boss, 39, has seven rides on the eight-race card and TAB Sportsbet has quoted him second favourite at $2.40 for the jockeys' challenge behind Craig Williams, who is in outstanding form, at $1.95.

Boss' mounts are all well fancied and he is strong chance to kick off the day with a win on Maribyrnong Plate placegetter Happy Knockout for David Hayes in the opening race, the Junior Jocks Christmas Party Plate (1000m).

His other rides are Parkour and Jumaana for Peter Moody, I'm A Toff and Geyser Peak for Danny O'Brien, Keeping Score for Michael Hibbs and Justsay Sumthink for Peter Healey.

Boss, who has ridden 62 Group One winners including three Melbourne Cups on Makybe Diva, is bewildered by his lack of opportunities in Sydney after he returned from Hong Kong earlier this year.

He was a star of the autumn carnival with wins in two of Sydney's most prestigious races, the Golden Slipper on Sebring and Doncaster Handicap on Triple Honour, but in recent months has been unable to attract quality rides.

Meanwhile, popular jockey Peter Hutchinson will have his first race ride in nearly 6-1/2 years when he partners first starter Carrapateena at Yarra Glen on Saturday.

Hutchinson, 43, has been riding trackwork for trainer Robert Smerdon since February and got serious about making a comeback to race riding in the middle of the year.

Smerdon has rewarded him with the mount on Carrapateena, a four-year-old daughter of Sudurka who has drawn gate 13 in the Falcon Pools Maiden Plate.

"I bought a new saddle today and I am pumped and ready to go," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson has ridden close to 900 winners and the David Hayes-trained Fraar, who won the 1993 Caulfield Cup, was the last and most notable of his five Group One winners.

He retired after his ride on Chakotay who finished fifth at Werribee on July 21, 2002.

Hutchinson said Carrapateena was a staying type of mare but he expected her to be running on strongly in Saturday's 1000-metre event.

"They will probably be a bit zippy for her but I expect her to be running into the placings," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson has only one ride at Yarra Glen and is booked to ride Angry Cat, trained by Jason Petch, at Kyneton on Tuesday.

Hutchinson's comeback comes after Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Greg Hall this week declared he could be a chance to return to race riding after retiring seven years ago.

Hall, 51, resumed riding trackwork at Mornington this week and said that his priority was to get fit before making any comeback plans.

Hall, who rode 44 Group One winners and another 157 stakeswinners, last rode in March 2001.
