Todd Howlett says Glen Boss will have the freedom to ride Star Of Octagonal as he sees fit when the promising galloper makes his return in the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle.

Boss rode Star Of Octagonal to victory in the South Pacific Classic and Scone Guineas during the autumn and has the job of piloting the joint race favourite from barrier 10 in Wednesday's Group Three 1300m event.

The champion jockey will be chasing a feature race double at Newcastle this year after winning the Newcastle Newmarket on Walking Or Dancing in March.

"It's a big plus to have a jockey like Glen sticking with him," Howlett said.

"I think you've just got to wait and see how things pan out but when you put a jockey like Glen Boss on you're not really going to tell him what to do.

"I think you've got to let them make up their own mind and the horse is quite adaptable."

Star Of Octagonal hasn't missed a place in all six of his starts and last preparation progressed from a maiden win at Gosford to being a Group Three winner at Randwick and winner of the lucrative $770,000 Scone Guineas.

Howlett was set to send Star Of Octagonal to Randwick for a first-up assignment on September 4 but the trainer decided to scratch him on race morning.

"I'm pleased with the way he is going, I would have liked to have had that run a fortnight ago at Randwick but with the track condition and the wide barrier I didn't start him and trialled him (over 1000m at Wyong) instead," Howlett said.

"The horse is fit and well but he will take some benefit from the run."

The Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 2 is the aim with Star Of Octagonal but his next start in the Group Three Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) at Randwick a week before the Epsom is likely to decide whether he takes his place in the famous mile handicap.

"We're probably a bit back further than I planned so it does just depend on the horse," the trainer said.

Star Of Octagonal was given 52kg when Epsom weights were released on Monday and the winner of the Cameron Handicap is exempt from the ballot.

Talented four-year-old Trusting is joint favourite with Star Of Octagonal in the field of 13 which also includes last year's Epsom winner Rock Kingdom.

Trusting finished an eye-catching third first-up in the Concorde Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 28.

Wednesday's program, the first of the two-day Newcastle Gold Cup carnival, also includes the running of the Group Three Spring Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds while Thursday's meeting is highlighted by the Group Three Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) and Listed Tibbie Stakes (1400m).
