A filly with a close maternal connection to a Golden Slipper winner and a Victoria Derby hero ran the fastest of 12 Sydney two-year-old barrier trials on Monday.

Most of the 81 babies who contested heats at Canterbury were stepping out in public for the first time and it was the Grahame Begg-trained Kyria who stole the show when it came to the stopwatch.

Kyria, a daughter of champion sire Encosta De Lago, went to the line in the 900m heat under a solid hold from jockey Brenton Avdulla.

Retained to race by her breeder Paul Fleming, Kyria swept over the top of her rivals to score a two-length win in 54.89s.

Kyria's dam Rhema is a winning half-sister to the 2005 Victoria Derby winner Benicio.

Her grand-dam is Mannington, a daughter of the Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay.

Begg said Kyria would have her first start in the $100,000 Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on October 1.

"Provided she pulls up well she'll run in the Gimcrack and then go to the spelling paddock," Begg said.

"If they can win a bit of money in the spring it eases the burden of trying to get into races in the autumn."

Begg described Kyria as an untapped filly.

"We haven't done much with her at home and it's always hard to tell what they've got," he said.

"That's why I was pleased with how she did it in the trial and she seems to have coped very well."

Kyria's time was fractionally quicker than the 54.90s recorded by Gerald Ryan's Haradasun filly My Shabella who was pushed out to win her heat after racing deep on the speed.

The Chris Waller-trained Spirit Of Speed, a son of Flying Spur, narrowly won his trial in 55s to clock in as the fastest colt of the morning.

My Shabella and the Zizou filly Risky Blonde carried the torch for first season sires with their heat wins.

Darley produced several blue bloods for pleasing results.

Knoydart, a More Than Ready colt who is the second foal from Group One Coolmore Classic winner Regal Cheer, was tradesmanlike in his trial victory.

Sessions, a son of Lonhro and brother to Group Two winner Renaissance, made a late run to score a soft win while Hussonet colt Tatra was a narrow winner of his trial.

Patinack Farm had a large contingent of youngsters and collected wins with Husson filly Hussousa and Shamardal colt Gottagun.
