A gear change could prove the key to unlocking the potential of juvenile Limes who takes on undefeated colt All Too Hard in Saturday's Pago Pago Stakes.

One of two runners for trainer Peter Snowden along with Narcissus, Limes will be without blinkers for the first time at Rosehill.

Josh Parr has ridden Limes at his only two starts and believes the colt will settle better without blinkers.

"It was actually my recommendation to take them off," Parr said.

"He needs them in the sense he has a real gawk around and he's not too sure about horses around him.

"But while they're on and he can't see the other horses he's overracing and trying to get things over and done with.

"I think I'd rather him having no blinkers on and relaxing and having a chance to finish the race off, rather than overracing and having nothing to give the last 200 metres."

Limes was well fancied at his debut in November last year and finished third behind two handy youngsters in Faustus and Kuchinskaya.

He returned from a spell with a sound fourth to Ashokan in the Skyline Stakes earlier this month.

Parr has no doubt about Limes' ability but says he has been a slow learner.

"He's a promising type. He's still learning all about the trade," Parr said.

"The ability is there though, it's just a matter of things going right for him and him making improvement each time he steps out.

"He's getting close to the mark."

All Too Hard, an impressive winner of his two starts in Melbourne, has a stranglehold on Pago Pago betting and was the $1.40 favourite with TAB Sportsbet on Thursday.

Collect at $4.60 is the only other runner given a realistic chance of upsetting the favourite with Narcissus next best at $9.

Limes is a $26 chance and while Parr doesn't expect him to rocket into Golden Slipper contention, he believes Limes has the potential to figure over the carnival.

"He's not a Slipper horse I don't think but if he learns quick enough you could see him in the Sires or Champagne being competitive," Parr said.

"As long as he keeps going forward."
