Chris Waller experienced the highs and lows of training racehorses at Randwick on Saturday with Kossack suffering a fatal injury before Mutawarath eased the pain slightly with victory.

Both horses were imported to Australia from Europe, a practice that has proved successful for Waller over the past few years.

Kossack led the field into the straight in The Chandon Hcp (2400m) but broke down in the run home.

"Kossack was one of our mates, they all are," Waller said.

"I feel particularly sorry for the staff who are hands-on with these horses every day.

"It's always sad to lose one but the injury was high up on his stifle and was just too serious."

Mutawarath prevailed by a long head over Jimmy Fortunes to win the McGrath Estate Agents (1600m) to record his fourth Australian victory.

"I'd like to be able to ride him cold one day and see him hit the line," Waller said.

"He would learn a lot. He needs to be able to do that to take the next step up.

"But he's building a good record just on his ability."

The Waller-trained Dystopia finished second in the Sharp Handicap (1200m) while Snow Alert was third in the Group Two Villiers Stakes (1600m) won by Dances On Waves.
