Trainer Liam Birchley hopes to return to Sydney for some autumn carnival riches with stablemates Vietnam and Pepperwood after they clash in the Listed Falvelon Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Birchley endured a frustrating January before Fear No Other won the $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) at Randwick on Australia Day.

He was previously runner-up with Paprika in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast and also with Sarge In Charge in the Karaka Million in New Zealand last month.

Birchley has pencilled in two Group One features in Sydney for Vietnam who won the Group Three Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm in May before her last-start seventh to Absolut Glam in the Group One Winter Stakes (1400m) at the same track in June.

Pepperwood, winner of the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1630m) at Doomben in December and last month's Magic Million Stayer's Cup (1800m) at the Gold Coast, is being aimed at the Group One Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick in April.

Vietnam's missions in Sydney are the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 21 and Group One Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the same distance at Rosehill on April 4.

Birchley won't be surprised if Vietnam produces a forward showing first-up after having two barrier trials in preparation for her comeback while Pepperwood's hopes will be enhanced if the track is wet.

"Vietnam came back very big from her spell but she's been in work for a while," Birchley said.

"She still looks a bit big and there's room for improvement but she's done enough work to be a chance first-up.

"If I think she might need another run before she goes away then I'll give her one here, otherwise she'll go straight to Sydney."

Brad Pengelly, who won the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) aboard Rock Me Baby at Randwick this month, will partner Vietnam while Shane Scriven will ride Pepperwood.

Birchley is in no hurry to dispatch Pepperwood to Sydney and has pencilled in another Brisbane run over 1600 metres before the four-year-old heads interstate.

"Pepperwood will have two runs here before he goes away and will go to 1600 metres next run," he said.

"He's headed for the Doncaster but realistically he'll need a wet track down there.

"Although this is only 1200 metres on Saturday he'll have no problems stepping up to 1600 metres next time.

"He only had three weeks in the paddock after his win on Magic Millions day.

"He's very capable on his day and is a definite hope tomorrow especially if we get a wet track.

"Either way he'll run a solid race."
