It's a long way from a Sunshine Coast maiden to stakes company but Jason McLachlan is adamant his newest stable star Absalon won't be out of place among racing's elite.

Absalon produced a whirlwind finish to score an impressive win in the $100,000 Listed Dalrello Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Monday and the victory justified the high opinion McLachlan formed of the horse long ago.

"He's some horse this bloke," McLachlan said.

"I told everyone he was a Group-class horse after he won at the Sunshine Coast but they all laughed because it was only up the coast.

"And you wait until you see him get over bit further - he'll be better when he gets to a mile.

"He'll win Group races this horse, I'm sure of that."

Ridden by Eddie Wilkinson, Absalon ($13) steamed home near last on the corner to beat Mahisara ($3.70) by a short-half head with Mr Favulous ($7) a length-and-a-quarter back third.

Absalon is raced Gerry Harvey and the striking son of Mossman is the first horse the Magic Millions principal has given to McLachlan.

Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith continued a profitable Brisbane winter carnival assault when lightly-raced gelding Ready Steady Vetti scored a determined win in the $50,000 QTIS Handicap (1110m).

Smith opened his northern raid when his stable star Hurtle Myrtle won the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes on June 4 and Ready Steady Vetti continued the momentum with a determined last-stride win over Excellantes.

Excellantes ($3.10) look set for victory when he dashed clear in the straight but Ready Steady Vetti ($7) stuck to his guns and finished hard to score a half-head win with The Barracks ($10) another 3-1/4 lengths back third.

Steel Dragon started the solidly supported $3 favourite but never threatened after enjoying the run of the race.

Coffs Harbour galloper Cyclone Brad landed some good bets when he scored a last-stride win in the $45,000 St Margaret's Handicap (1010m).

Cyclone Brad shortened from $3.40 to run the $2.80 favourite but he gave his backers a few heart flutters when he was stuck in traffic in the straight.
