Bennie Benbow is ready to return to racing's city spotlight - two years after life-saving medical procedure.

Benbow, who has Wordmaster entered at Flemington on Saturday, had surgery for a brain aneurysm.

The 53-year-old father of Group One-winning jockey Jason Benbow has made a complete recovery but prefers to keep a small team of racehorses in work.

Wordmaster, a six-length Bendigo maiden winner earlier this month, is the stable star and he lines up in the Fiesta Star Handicap (1000m) at Flemington.

"I've always had a big opinion of this horse," Benbow said.

"He showed unbelievable talent as a two-year-old but we spelled him when he went shinny (shinsore) and he injured himself kicking over a rail which put him back eight months.

"We brought him back for his first start in a three-year-old maiden at Seymour 12 months ago but he got into more trouble than the early settlers (finishing 12th).

"His next run was Kilmore Cup day (last February) when he got tightened up at the start and just got beaten (when a short-head second).

"But he wasn't right behind after that and we gave him another preparation after a spell and put him out again as I still wasn't happy with him."

Andrew Mallyon, who rode the gelding in the Bendigo win, stays with him on Saturday.

"Andrew eased him up 40 metres out when he won here (at Bendigo)," Benbow said.

"It's a big step up from a maiden to a 0-78 event, but I give him half a chance, he's pretty smart."

Benbow said his last city winner was at Caulfield with Rapid Waters in March 2002.

Among Wordmaster's opposition is topweight Briefed who is resuming from a spell and is unbeaten in three first-up runs to date, including a 1000m win at Flemington in April.
