Race-hardened Secrets Untold took the honours with his third straight win but it was the performances of the beaten brigade which was the talk of the track at Eagle Farm.

Secrets Untold sat in the box seat before scoring by three-quarters of a length from Grafton Cup runner-up Hume in Saturday's Paynter Dixon Qld Handicap (1500m).

Crossthestart was a similar margin away third.

While trainer Phillip Cox had no big ambitions with Secrets Untold, the performance of both placegetters pleased their respective trainers Brian Smith and Bevan Laming who have their eyes on the Group One Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick in October.

Hume was having his first start since his defeat in the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) in July and his finishing effort didn't disappoint Smith.

Crossthestart's effort also pleased Laming who will give the five-year-old one more start in Brisbane before confirming a trip interstate.

"I don't like doing it but I have to run Hume in the Hill Stakes at Rosehill in a fortnight," Smith said.

"It's weight-for-age but I have to go that way because the handicapper has really got to him.

"They went slow early which didn't suit him but it was a pleasing run.

"He's a loose sort of horse and he probably got back a bit further than he should have but he loves getting to the line."

Smith has also nominated Hume for the Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick the same day as the Metropolitan as well as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Hume was a $400,000 buy for Lloyd Williams as a yearling but was sold for $22,000 at a dispersal sale in Victoria after winning two of his first three starts at Ballarat and Geelong.

Under Smith's care, Hume has won four times in Brisbane including the Group Three Tattersall's Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm in June.

Laming conceded Crossthestart may have lacked some fitness in his first start since winning over 2020 metres at Doomben in late July.

"I'm happy enough with the run but I'll give him another start in a Class Six in two weeks before we decide if he'll go away," Laming said.

"He probably wasn't quite fit enough today and he changed course a few times in the straight."
