Melbourne Cup winner Viewed is expected to launch his autumn carnival campaign in a race that has twice confirmed the genius of trainer Bart Cummings.

As Viewed rests in a paddock near Bowral in the NSW Southern Highlands, Cummings, with history as his ally, is already thinking ahead to next year.

At the forefront of his plans for Viewed is a return to racing in the CF Orr Stakes, a Group One weight-for-age race run over 1400m.

On face value it is an unlikely race for the winner of the world's richest handicap to leave an imprint at their next start but past results show the Orr has proven significance for Cummings.

"It's been done before," Cummings said in reference to the Melbourne Cup winner resuming on a victorious note in the Orr.

His father Jim trained Comic Court to complete the double in 1950-51 and two of his own modern day greats - Let's Elope and Saintly - have followed suit. Cummings's mare Leilani finished second in the 1974 Melbourne Cup before winning the Orr.

At Talaq and Jeune also confirmed they were more than just outstanding stayers when they won both races for Colin and David Hayes respectively.

"Seven furlongs around Caulfield seems a good starting point (for Viewed)," Cummings said.

Saintly never raced again after winning the 1997 Orr Stakes but Let's Elope went through undefeated in her 1992 three-start autumn campaign, culminating in her Australian Cup victory at Flemington.

A similar route awaits Viewed with Cummings chasing his 14th Australian Cup success.

While Viewed's Melbourne Cup preparation opened with a midfield placing over 1600m at Flemington in early September, he is a two-time winner from four first-up starts.

Viewed's turn of foot, so evident when it allowed him to open up a decisive margin over the Melbourne Cup field, has carried him to first-up victories at Warwick Farm and Rosehill over 1400m and 1300m respectively.

Cummings said Viewed would continue to spell at owner Dato'Tan Chin Nam's Think Big Stud at Burradoo, two hours south of Sydney, before returning to stable life.

"He'll be out for a month before he comes back into work," Cummings said.
