Trainer Danny O'Brien admits wide gates have made it difficult for his two Caulfield Cup runners but he will not be changing their tactics.

Makybe Diva Stakes winner Vigor has the outside draw in the field 18 and four emergencies while 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly fared marginally better in barrier 18.

"In big handicaps where you have 18 runners you need everything to go right and it doesn't help when you give up a bit of an advantage," O'Brien said.

Vigor, who races forward, has fallen out of favour since his Makybe Diva win and is $10 with TAB Sportsbet while Master O'Reilly is $14.

Last start Vigor was more than eight lengths behind the winner Efficient when 13th in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington while he was held up for run in the last 200 metres when sixth to Heart Of Dreams in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 19.

O'Brien said the barrier would not dictate how Corey Brown would ride Vigor.

"He will go forward," O'Brien said. "We are not going to grab hold of him, I wouldn't have thought."

Master O'Reilly is backmarker and will again have a similar role with his regular rider Vlad Duric in the saddle.

The seven-year-old has been working into form with improving runs at his three starts this campaign including an eye-catching fourth in last Saturday's Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield .

Notably, the first three horses home in the Yalumba - Whobegotyou, Heart Of Dreams and Vision And Power - are not in the Caulfield Cup.

Master O'Reilly was seventh in the Underwood and third in the Makybe Diva at his other runs this campaign.

He would be only the seventh multiple Caulfield Cup winner, the last being Ming Dynasty in 1977 and 1980.

Others to win in split years were Whittier (1922 and 1925), Uncle Sam (1912 and 1914), and Paris (1892 and 1994).

Rising Fast (1954-55) and Poseidon (1906-07) won consecutive Caulfield Cups.

O'Brien said Master O'Reilly was going better than ever while conceding that the horse with best run in the Cup would win.

"He (Master O'Reilly) is a class act and he is going well but he hasn't won since the Caulfield Cup two years ago."
