A favourable barrier draw is crucial to the chances of Rick Hore-Lacy ending his Group One drought with highly promising colt Toorak Toff in the Golden Rose.

Hore-Lacy has a history of producing good horses and has won 18 Group One races, the latest with Rinky Dink in the Australasian Oaks at Morphettville six years ago.

"It's a long time if you've been waiting. You wouldn't want to be holding your breath," Hore-Lacy said.

His headline horses have been Redoute's Choice, Canny Lad, Canny Lass and Foxseal. Toorak Toff has indicated he could join that elite group by winning four of his seven starts to date.

"He's a very good horse," Hore-Lacy said.

"We're just hoping he can draw a gate and Ollie (jockey Damien Oliver) can get a nice run in the race and hopefully he can win it. He's raced against a lot of those horses before.

"Masquerader looks the one to beat but Toorak Toff has got to be one of the chances, especially if he draws a gate. He can handle any type of going."

The big striding chestnut son of Group One winning sprinter Show A Heart came from last to win the Vain Stakes (1100m) when he resumed on his home track at Caulfield on a slow track on August 14.

By Sunday he was equal favourite with Masquerader at $4.60 for the first Group One race of the season.

Hore-Lacy said the travelling and racing Toorak Toff had already done, to Adelaide twice and Sydney twice, would stand him in good stead for the Golden Rose (1400m).

"Last time he went to Sydney he got off the float after a 14 hour trip without a hair out of place, not the slightest sweat mark. I couldn't believe it," he said.

"He's an experienced traveller and when a horse has a temperament like he has it really helps."

Toorak Toff is currently $8.50 second pick with TAB Sportsbet for the Caulfield Guineas behind Blue Diamond Stakes winner Star Witness.

But Hore-Lacy said it was too early for comparisons with Redoute's Choice who won four Group One races including the 1999 Caulfield Guineas after an epic battle with Testa Rossa.

"Really it's too early. Redoute's Choice won four Group One races by the autumn of his three-year-old career," he said.

"This horse could go on and win a couple this spring I suppose and more next autumn but he has a lot of catching up to do."

Meanwhile owner-breeder David Moodie said Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily would be entered for Saturday's Group Three H D F McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield as an alternative to the Golden Rose.

"We'll see what the weather is like, we'll probably dual accept," he said.

Final acceptances for the Golden Rose will be taken on Tuesday.
