Brenton Avdulla has been called in to see if he can conjure another surprise result for trainer Gary Portelli.

Hailed by the Warwick Farm trainer as a miracle worker after riding Rose Of Peace to a recent stakes win at $101, Avdulla will partner the Portelli-trained Heels for the first time in a race at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Heels, a three-year-old filly, will contest a 1200m sprint against her own kind.

It's a benchmark race Portelli describes as a stakes event in disguise.

"It's a very strong race," Portelli said.

"It's probably equivalent to a Listed race and there are some fillies who are tipped to go on to a stakes race during the carnival after this.

"At least my filly has got barrier one and she's got Brenton Avdulla.

"You've got to have a crack because, you never know, Brenton might be able to work another miracle."

Heels owes Portelli after she was beaten into fourth place at Canterbury - less than 24 hours before Rose Of Peace ran over the top of her rivals in the Wenona Girl Handicap at Randwick.

"She worked with Rose Of Peace on the (previous) Tuesday and gave her a touch up but then she came out and got beaten in a no-metropolitan win race.

"It was hard to have Rose Of Peace after that result but she then came out and won a Listed race. The bookies got my money."

Portelli said trackwork would again provide the best guide to Heels' chances at Canterbury.

"She works like a stakes horse so you never know. Second-up she just may have had a bad day," he said.

Among Heels' Canterbury rivals will be Dark Brown Sugar, a Hawkesbury-trained filly who spreadeagled her rivals at her last run before a spell.

Breaking maiden ranks at her third start, Dark Brown Sugar had almost six lengths to spare in a Randwick win.

She looked just as sharp winning a recent Hawkesbury barrier trial by more than four lengths.

John O'Shea will saddle up two promising fillies - Princess Layla and Bound To Blush.

Bound To Blush puts an unbeaten record on the line while Princess Layla, a winner at Gosford, resumes after finishing a close fourth in a Listed race during last year's Melbourne Cup carnival.
