The death of top jumper Geeorb at Moonee Valley has once again placed Victorian jumps racing in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

Geeorb was leading when he fell at the second last obstacle in Saturday's $200,000 AV Hiskens Steeplechase (4050m).

The eight-year-old, with jockey Steve Pateman trying to win the race for the first time, was still travelling well but was being hotly challenged by the eventual runner-up Hooker Road on his outside with the winner Pentiffic moving up three wide.

The crowd gasped when Geeorb crashed leaving Pentiffic and Hooker Road to fight out the finish.

It was something that jumps racing didn't need with the sport under more scrutiny than ever before.

A small number of anti-jumps protesters were at the course holding up banners and handing out leaflets.

They went even further on Saturday with a skywriter flying over Moonee Valley delivering the message "ban jumps" as the Hiskens was being run.

Geeorb, who broke his near-fore humerus, was the eighth horse to be killed so far this season, seven in jumps races and one in a jumps trial.

The sport was suspended after three horses died at the Warrnambool three-day carnival in May.

With pressure put on it by the anti-jumping lobby to ban jumps racing, the Racing Victoria Limited Board conducted an urgent review and decided to continue with the sport, but not unconditionally, and another review will be held at the end of the jumps season.

Earlier on Saturday, four-year-old mare Bowemma escaped injury after falling in the Barr Smith Hurdle (4050m).

Racing Victoria Limited steward Mark Hill, chairman of the Jumps Review Panel, said the incidents in both jumps races would be reviewed on Wednesday as they are routinely each week.
